Description
The Clapper Bridge, located approximately 20 metres east of Fountaine's Hospital in Linton, is a pedestrian bridge over Linton Beck. It likely dates from the 17th century or earlier and was repaired in the mid-20th century. The bridge is constructed from gritstone, featuring two piers made of rubble stone and roughly-shaped blocks that support three flat stone slabs. The outer ends of these slabs appear to rest only on the bank. The bridge has been insensitively repaired with concrete and includes wood and iron railings. It was possibly built to provide access from Fountaine's Hospital to the village of Thorpe and Burnsall beyond.
