Description

The coffin stone is a medieval stone slab located approximately 1 metre to the north-east of Ivelet Bridge, set in the verge beside the carriageway. It is traditionally believed to have been placed there to provide a resting spot for a wicker basket containing a body being transported along the route known as the Corpse Way from Upper Swaledale to Grinton church, prior to the construction of Muker church in 1580.
