Description
Smardale Bridge is a packhorse bridge located over Scandal Beck, south of Smardalegill Viaduct. It is likely from the 18th century and has had some later additions. The bridge is constructed from coursed, squared rubble and features flat copings. The original abutments are found at the west end of the north parapet and the east end of the south parapet, while later abutments, which are part of field walls, have been added to the east end of the north parapet and the west end of the south. The bridge has a single segmental arch that spans approximately 30 feet, and the roadway is about 6 feet wide between parapets that rise to around 3 feet high.
