Description
This is a barn that adjoins Hollin Hill Farmhouse to the east, likely built in the early to mid 18th century. It is constructed from coursed blue ragstone rubble with some sandstone, featuring sandstone quoins and a stone slate roof. The barn has an L-shaped layout, consisting of a 7-bay main range aligned on a north-west to south-east axis, with a short 3-bay west wing that connects to the east gable of the farmhouse. The first five bays of the main range contain a shippon.
On the exterior, the south front is made up of the wing and the slightly taller gable of the main range to the right. It has through-stones on three levels (four on the gabled section), a small porch attached to the farmhouse on the left, and three small windows to the right of the porch. Above the third window, there is a loading doorway, and in the center of the gabled section, there is a square-headed shippon doorway. The gable features two rows of regularly spaced slit breathers alternating with square holes, two stone slate bands, and a row of four pigeon holes above the upper band. The right side wall of the main range has through-stones on two levels, a stone slate drip-course above, and slit breathers on three levels. It also includes a row of six small one-light windows for the shippon and a segmental-headed wagon doorway in the sixth bay, with rubble voussoirs.
At the rear, there is a lean-to porch and cart-shed attached to the section adjoining the farmhouse, as well as a low lean-to porch at the wagon doorway opposite the other. Inside, there is a stone threshing floor between the wagon doorways and a raised wooden floor over the shippon. The main range features an 18th-century collar-trussed roof, while a large 19th-century truss is located at the junction with the side wing, which abuts the gable wall of the farmhouse that has a corbelled chimney. This barn forms a group with Hollin Hill Farmhouse.
