Description

Coltishall Hall is a former manor house, dating from the early 18th century and significantly enlarged in the late 19th century. The original house is centrally positioned within later additions, creating a 'U' shaped plan with two storeys and attics. The 18th-century facade has seven windows and features a plinth, rusticated quoins and a platband. In 1871, a shallow, projecting one-window entrance bay was added to the centre, also with rusticated quoins, flanking consoles on the plinth, and panels between the windows. This bay has a parapet gable with moulded brick panels, a timber modillion cornice, and scrolled pedimented dormer heads. The ground floor of the flanking wings may be of 18th-century origin, but the upper floors are 19th-century. There are two-bay blind arcades at ground floor level with a string course and semi-circular arches. The first floor has a platband, rusticated quoins, and two windows. The east wing has seven windows, with a niche at ground floor level. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars and flat gauged brick arches. The roofs are hipped, and there are two axial chimney stacks with cornices. The interior is mainly 20th century, though it retains two sets of 18th-century arches with timber Corinthian columns in the hall. A fine early 19th-century winding stair features an inlaid handrail, balusters, and tread ends, enclosed within an apsidal space with niches. A tented ceiling is found in the east wing. Northern extensions to the western and eastern wings are not considered to be of special architectural or historical interest.
