Description

The Limes is a house dated 1692, constructed of red brick and featuring black pantiles, slate, and 20th-century tiles at the rear. It is a two-storey building with attics and has early 19th-century wings that project north towards the road, creating a U-shaped plan. There is a lean-to addition on the west side. The facade displays seven windows arranged in three bays, with the outer bays slightly projecting and having hipped roofs. The building has a brick plinth, rusticated brick quoins, and a moulded brick platband at the first-floor level.

The central entrance features a moulded two-panel door framed by a moulded timber surround, with a gauged brick door surround, brick pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, and a segmental pediment. The early 19th-century sash windows are in their original openings and have glazing bars, with flat gauged brick arches above them. The eaves are moulded, and the hipped roof has end stacks that were partially rebuilt in the late 20th century. A chimney on the west side has dated tie irons.

At the rear, the first-floor windows are 18th-century, featuring tran-somed two-light designs with wrought iron casements. There is also an off-centre five-panelled door in a moulded timber frame with a segmental brick arch above it. The building has two segmental-headed dormers with two-light casements. Inside, there is a three-flight 17th-century staircase with moulded strings, urn-shaped balusters, and square-capped newels. The interior also includes two-panel doors with moulded timber architraves and over-doors, as well as a pine-panelled drawing room that features a 17th-century moulded timber fire surround.
