Description
Herringfleet Marsh Mill is a smock drainage mill windpump, built around 1820, likely by Barnes of Yarmouth, and is currently preserved in working order by Suffolk County Council. The mill features an octagonal timber-framed structure that is black weatherboarded and sits on a brick plinth, with two floors above the ground floor. It has a boat-shaped cap and is equipped with four common (cloth-spread) sails. The winding mechanism is operated by a braced tailpole with a geared hand winch.
Inside, the machinery includes a cast iron windshaft, an all-wood clasp-arm brakewheel, and a wallower, along with a wooden upright shaft. At the base of this upright shaft, a cast iron crown wheel drives an iron pit wheel fitted with wooden cogs. An external scoopwheel is present, with its shaft inscribed 'W.T. ENGLAND. MILLWRIGHT. YARMOUTH 1910.'
The ground floor contains a small fireplace, with the internal flue extending only to the first floor level. This mill is notable as the last full-size smock drainage mill in the Broads area.
