Description

The north courtyard to Hoveton House, including its outbuildings, dates from the 18th century. It is constructed of brick and features pantiled roofs. A brick wall with brick coping extends north from the 1851 section of the main house, then turns west and south, connecting to the west wall of the house by the Courtroom. This wall is interrupted at intervals by various outbuildings.

In the north-east corner, there is a tack room that was originally a single storey but was raised to two storeys in the early 19th century. It has a gabled roof and doors on the south side, topped by a square hipped cupola. The west return has been developed into a single-storey gabled outbuilding, which features doors and windows on the north side.

Prominently, the south wall contains a stone sundial dated 1722, with an inscription panel below it. To the left of the sundial is a relief carving of Old Father Time, while to the right is a similar panel depicting a skeleton holding an hourglass and a scythe. The wall continues south with a pair of square gate piers and leads into the Courtroom. This structure is one storey high with a sloping lean-to roof. The south elevation consists of three bays with cross casement windows of two lights, set beneath gauged skewback arches. A moulded string course runs below the parapet, which has three recessed panels. There is a gabled passageway between this building and the west wall of the house.
