Description
The summerhouse, located 15 meters southwest of Lavengro, dates from around 1830 and has been altered over time. It is constructed with a timber frame and is weatherboarded on a brick plinth. A brick extension was added to the west around 1850, and it features a late 20th-century felt roof. The building has a square plan with chamfered corners, giving it an octagonal appearance. There are half-glazed doors on the southeast and northeast sides, with replaced windows on the south side. The roof is pyramidal, ending in a small octagonal lantern.
This summerhouse has historical significance as it was associated with George Borrow, who lived at Oulton Cottage from 1840 to 1853 and again from 1874 to 1881, passing away there in 1881. It served as his study, and he wrote his novel "Lavengro," published in 1851, entirely within this building. Oulton Cottage was demolished after 1885, and a new house named Lavengro was built, which is not included in this listing.
