Description

Park Cottage, originally part of Cruckwell House, is a house dating back to the medieval period, initially constructed as a two-bay cruck timber-frame building. In the 16th century, a two-bay timber-framed crosswing was added to the east end, creating a lobby entrance arrangement and incorporating a fireplace in the intervening space. A 20th-century rear wing has also been added. The walls are primarily brickwork in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring blue header vertical flush panels and cambered openings. The east wall exhibits exposed bricknogging over flintwork, with brick dressings, and the rear is painted brickwork in a Flemish Garden Wall bond pattern. The west wall has exposed framing with 20th-century brickwork and some flintwork. The roof is tiled, with a hip form above the main section and a catslide at the rear, and half-hipped on the extensions. The house is a complex L-shaped structure reflecting several phases of building. The south front has two storeys and three windows, while the west side is single-storeyed with one window. Casement windows are present throughout. The front doorway has a pediment hood supported by brackets, leading to a six-panelled door. Inside, the original cruck timbers remain visible in the west wall, with other framing exposed to indicate the different construction phases. One fireplace has a Tudor-style chamfered brick arch.
