Description
The Church of St Michael is a church located in Malling, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, with rebuilding that took place between 1626 and 1628. The foundation stone was laid by John Evelyn, who later became known as a diarist and arboriculturalist. The church underwent restoration in 1874. It is constructed of flint with stone quoins and dressings, and features plain tiled roofs.
The building has a low two-stage west tower that includes a west window, likely from the early 14th century, designed in a curvilinear style. The tower is topped with a pyramidal roof and a weathervane. The nave consists of four bays, accompanied by a single bay chancel, with all windows being cusped lancets added in 1874. There is a gabled south porch that features a moulded round arch with key- and impost-blocks, along with a hoodmould above. A datestone marked 1628 is located over the porch. Additionally, there is a north vestry. Inside, the tower-arch has responds dating from the late 13th or 14th century, and there is a low octagonal vault.
