Description

Malling Deanery is a house, now divided, dating to circa 1660, and potentially incorporating an earlier building. It is constructed of red brick with some blue brick and red brick dressings. The design includes red brick pilasters which are set back at angles, allowing for rusticated red brick quoins. A modillioned wooden eaves cornice sits atop a steeply-pitched hip roof covered in plain tiles. Four hipped dormers are present, along with tall brick ridge stacks featuring arched sides and oversailing cornices, two on each side of the roof ridge, and two at the rear. The building follows a U-plan, with a deep recess to the rear.

The north front has two storeys and attics, with seven bays. It features glazing bar sashes, with painted lintels; these are largely replacements from the later 18th century for cross-windows. A tripartite sash window is found in the third bay from the right on the ground floor. A projecting porch is situated in the third bay from the left, featuring a flat head and parapet, and a triangular pediment above a round-arched door surround. A panelled door completes the porch. A later 18th-century rounded bow has been added to the left-hand return front.

Inside, one room has a later 17th-century foliate plaster ceiling of ramified oval form. A three-flight staircase is present, featuring early 17th-century openwork splat balusters and a closed string.
