Description
The wall surrounding Malling House on the east, south, west, and part of the north sides is likely from the 18th century. It is primarily made of brick with some stone dressings, especially in the gazebo located at the south-west corner. There are two gateways on the east side, each featuring low rusticated piers topped with half globes, and flanked by volute brackets, except for the northernmost gate pier. At the western end of the wall on the north side, there is a larger volute bracket that connects the 18th-century wall to a 20th-century wall, which is not of special interest. The low wall on the north and east sides is about four feet high. The buttressed south wall extends around to the south-west for approximately 100 yards, supporting the garden to the south of Malling House.
The gazebo at the western end of this wall is also from the 18th century, constructed of red brick with stone dressings, featuring a red brick parapet and a plain tiled roof. It is a single storey with a central portico in antis, supported by two central Tuscan columns and two outer columns, topped with a pediment set into the parapet. There is one window on the left side of the gazebo. Inside, the rear is panelled to match the intercolumniation of the portico, and there is a gauged red brick niche to the right. The wall continues to the north of the gazebo for about 100 yards, standing approximately 12 feet high, made of red and blue brick, with two red brick gate piers featuring cornices and half-globe capping towards the north end, which are now partially filled in.
