Description
Rottingdean Windmill is a smock mill built in 1802 and has undergone significant restoration. It features a brick base that is tarred, with tarred weatherboarding above. The structure is octagonal and has a hooded cap. One entrance at the base has been blocked, while another appears to have been created. The shutters for the sweeps and the fantail are missing. The mill ceased operation in 1881 and has been restored and repaired multiple times, specifically in 1905-1906, 1935, 1966, 1975, and 1988. The artist William Nicholson used this windmill as inspiration for a silhouette design that became the imprint for Messrs Heinemann, publishers.
