Description
No 203 is a house located on the north side of High Street in Lewes, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with a date of 1735 noted on the rainwater head. The building is constructed of red and brown brick and features a coped parapet above a slated roof that is hipped and has two segment-headed dormers. It has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a five-window front that includes sashes without glazing bars set in wide moulded frames. The central entrance is framed by a later 18th-century columned surround, featuring individual Corinthian columns with entablature blocks that support an open segmental pediment. The entrance is arched, with panelled reveals and a panelled door accessed by seven steps with an overlight above. There is a moulded iron bootscraper on the lowest step. The basement has segment-headed windows. On either side of the front door, there is an area enclosed by spearhead railings and vasehead standards. Inside, the board room features mid-18th-century fielded panelling, a dado rail, and a later 18th-century fire-surround. The house also has an early 18th-century two-flight staircase.
