UPHAM CHURCH STREET SU 52 SW 1/11 Church of St Mary (formerly listed as The Church) 6.3.67 II

Parish church. C13, west tower of the early C18, mainly a restoration of 1881 by G E Street. Chancel with north vestry, nave of three bays with wide north aisle and narrow south aisle, extending south of the west tower, south porch. Walls of flint with stone dressings, mostly coupled windows of Perpendicular style, the east window of three lights having older parts: the tower is of brickwork in Flemish bond with blue headers. Tile roof (repaired 1985) of triple pile across nave and aisles. The interior is Victorian, with a taller south arcade of late-Perpendicular style: at the east end of the north aisle a pointed arch resting on Norman half columns is a survivor of the old church. Stone pulpit, octagonal font, a few mid C19 small wall monuments, and an oil-painting of the Italian School (of the Crucifixian) above the south door.
