Description
St John's House is a medieval hall in ruins, dating from the 13th century. The structure features walls made of flint with stone dressings, including a plinth and four lower window openings with chamfered reveals. There is a wider cill for a hall window, a hall doorway, and a low doorway leading to a cellar. The hall is supported by four columns on octagonal bases, with one column complete and half-columns set against the walls at the end of each arcade. It is a rectangular aisled hall consisting of three bays, with a west end cellar that may have been located below a solar. The walls remain unevenly preserved to the cill height of the hall, and there is a jamb of a doorway leading to the solar. The thickening of the cellar walls indicates the possibility of vaulting.
