Description
Abbey House is a house built in 1825 as a Rectory by the Reverend E Lancaster. The structure features brick walls in English bond with some blue headers and red flush dressings. It has a plinth, rubbed flat and round arches within ground-floor blind arches, a parapet with stone coping, and a deep decorative brick band with stone cills. The roof is a mansard hipped tile design with flat-roofed dormers.
The building has a classical square form, with a symmetrical east front that has two storeys and three windows. The windows are sashes set in reveals, with arched heads on the ground floor. The doorcase is designed in the Doric Order, featuring triglyphs and finely-fluted columns on the top two-thirds, two columns, and two pilasters. It has an arched opening with a decorative fanlight, an architrave, and a six-panelled door, all above stone steps.
The north elevation is also symmetrical, featuring full-height bows on each side, two storeys and an attic, with a window arrangement of 2.2.2. The ground-floor has deep casements with narrow side panes. The other elevations are irregular but include similar features, brick dentil eaves, and a large 20th-century French window on the south side.
