Description

St Clair's Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed house dating from around 1350, featuring an upper hall. It has a 15th-century timber frame attached, with 16th-century inserted fireplaces and stack, and 18th-century remodelling that contributes to its current appearance. The walls are constructed of mathematical tiles in 'Flemish' bond, with some tile-hanging, and the frame is exposed in the north bay. The roof is hipped and covered with tiles.

The symmetrical east elevation consists of two storeys with three windows, and the upper walls are tile-hung. There are casement windows and a doorway featuring a reeded architrave, a pediment, and a six-panelled door. The west elevation is similar but includes a mid-19th-century brick porch. The north elevation has a central full-height bay with one window above three, showcasing exposed framing and a hipped roof. Behind this bay rises a massive stack with three separate diagonal flues.

Inside, the southeast part of the building has very thick walls, and on the first floor, there is a medieval stone arch and reveal. The passageway through the middle of the house has, on its north side, the external wall of the timber-framed section, which reveals close-studding filled with flints. The staircase and doors, along with their architraves, give the interior an 18th-century appearance.
