Description
The Blackmoor War Memorial Cloister, Cross, and Fountain stands on the northern side of the road through Blackmoor village, positioned between the School and School House (Grade II) and the Church of St Matthew (Grade II*).
The structure takes the form of an open-fronted arcaded cloister on three sides, open to the south, resembling a traditional agricultural building. It is constructed of heavy timber-framing with a Bargate stone rear wall, which is lowered at the end bays fronting the road. The roof is of Horsham slates, ending at each side as a gable.
The cloister walkway is paved with stone flags and features a low bench running along the rear wall, interrupted only by a semi-circular drain serving the fountain. Steps lead down into the central garden, with a semi-circular front step to the road.
The rear (north) wall is covered with commemorative bronze plaques. The westernmost and easternmost plaques are square in form, whilst the two plaques flanking the central fountain have semi-circular heads. The western War plaque is ornamented with a leafless tree, and the eastern Peace plaque is ornamented with a tree in full leaf with blossoms. The inscriptions on these plaques address children, recalling the glory and sadness of war, and call for remembrance of the men who gave their lives in 1914–1918 and 1939–1945. Biblical passages relating to war and peace are inscribed, and the rightmost plaque records that the cloister and fountain were made by the parents of Robert Stafford and Arthur Palmer, who were killed in battle.
At the centre of the cloister stands a fountain within a niche. The fountain features a rose encircled by a laurel wreath cast in low relief above the dedication to the men of the village, with a small lion's head serving as the water spout.
A memorial cross stands at the centre of the garden. The cross takes the form of a wheel-head cross rising from a moulded collar, on an octagonal cross shaft. The moulded foot of the cross shaft, encircled by low-relief carvings, stands on a drum-like plinth octagonal in plan with a shallow circular head. The inscription TRULY THERE IS A GOD THAT JUDGETH THE EARTH is carved in relief around the circular head. The plinth stands on a three-stepped octagonal base.
