Description

This lychgate, located 20 meters north of the Church of St Peter on the Green in Froxfield, was built in 1906 and is designed in the Perpendicular style. It features an open work timber frame structure set on a low plinth wall made of flint and dressed stone ashlar. The roof is cruciform with tiles and has steeply pitched gables on the north, south, east, and west sides. The lychgate consists of two bays, with arched tie beams on the north and south elevations that support a decorative queen post arcade, which has three arched infill panels beneath the collar. The east and west elevations have grid-like framing, with a horizontal collar, tie beam, and lower member, along with two arched infill panels below the collar. The four gables are finished with plain bargeboards, and there are wooden double gates on the north elevation.

An inscription on the collar facing The Green states, '1906', while the tie beam below reads, 'This is Gods Acre'. Inside the lychgate, on the west gable, there is a metal plaque commemorating two friends from Monkton near Dublin, Sydney, New South Wales, dated Christmas Day 1888.

This well-executed and unaltered timber frame Edwardian lychgate has group value with the Grade II church and several other monuments in the churchyard.
