Description
This is a churchyard monument located approximately 12 meters north of the Church of St Peter on the Green in Froxfield, dating from around 1777. It is made of Portland stone and features an elaborate Rococo headstone with intricate carved scrollwork at the top and extending down the sides to the ground. The scrollwork divides the stone into two panels. The upper panel illustrates a resurrection scene, showing two cherubs sounding trumpets, one on each side of a tomb that has a skeleton lying on it. The lower panel bears the inscription for John Baker, who died on June 1st, 1777. This headstone is a high-quality example of Rococo carving, notable for its unique depiction of the resurrection scene, and it holds group value with the Grade II church and several other graded monuments in the churchyard.
