Description
This is a gas lamp standard, later converted to electricity, located 5 metres to the west of The Caprons in Lewes. It is depicted in a photograph from around 1870. The lamp standard is made of cast iron, likely produced locally from one of Lewes's many ironworks. It features a tapering, fluted, and panelled cylindrical design divided into four stages, with mouldings between each stage and a wider lower section that has a moulded cornice and plinth. At the top, there is a cast iron and glazed four-sided tapering lantern with a pyramidal roof and moulded finial. The lamp standard has been moved a metre or two to the east since the 1870 photograph. A 20th-century wooden panel affixed to the front recounts a supposed wager made by George IV when he was Prince of Wales, claiming he could drive a coach and four down the steep hill to Southover Grange.
