Description
The King family tomb, located 5 metres south-east of the chancel of St Mary's Church, is a churchyard monument dating from around 1834. It is constructed of Portland stone in a classical style.
The tomb is a rectangular chest tomb resting on a moulded base, topped with a moulded cover slab. It features broad reeded tapering corner pilasters with caps and bases. The sides and ends are adorned with octagonal fielded panels that contain inscriptions.
This monument marks the resting place of George King, who died on 19th August 1834, and his wife Elizabeth, who passed away on 28th March 1861. It also commemorates Jessy, the wife of Fielder King, who died on 30th March 1845, and their youngest son, Charles King, who died on 30th September 1878 in Akyab, Burmah.
The tomb is a fine example of early 19th-century classical design and is situated in a churchyard that contains several other listed monuments.
