Description

Bramdean Cottage is a cottage that dates from the 16th, 17th, and 19th centuries, with a remodel that occurred around 1982. It has a timber-frame core, with brick that is part rendered and colourwashed, topped by a plain tile roof. The original 16th-century structure is a three-bay house, which has a parallel range added to the rear, along with a 17th-century service wing located at the left rear and a 20th-century lean-to on the right end. The front of the cottage is one and a half stories high and features a three-bay layout.

On the left end, there is a 19th-century single-storey canted bay window with a pointed head and 19th-century casements. To the right of this bay is another pointed head casement and two early 19th-century three-light camber-headed casements. Above the right bay, there is a 20th-century tall gable with a two-light casement, while the other bays have 19th-century hipped dormers with three-light casements. There is a gable stack at each end of the cottage.

Notably, this cottage was the home of Field-Marshal Gomm in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, who fought at the Battle of Waterloo. The service wing at the rear served as the headquarters for Parliamentary forces during the Battle of Cheriton in 1644.
