Description
Hiorn's Tower is a folly built between 1787 and 1789, designed by architect Francis Hiorn for the 11th Duke of Norfolk. The structure is made of dressed knapped flint with a chequerboard pattern of Pulborough stone and features Pulborough stone dressings. It stands three storeys high with a parapet and has a hexagonal plan, complemented by octagonal turrets on alternate sides.
The three remaining sides of the tower each have one window range. The first-floor windows are square-headed, consisting of three lights with a 4-centred relieving arch, which are subdivided by three unmoulded cuspless lancets. Hoodmoulds extend as stringcourses. The crenellated parapet adds to the tower's defensive appearance. Each turret has four slit openings, coved machicolation, and crenellated parapets.
Access to the tower is through a door on the west side, which has a pointed arched head set within an oblong recessed panel. There are two similar doors in the east and south-west turrets, connected by a balcony with iron railings. The surrounding wall is made of knapped flint, not dressed, and features chequerboard flushwork of Pulborough stone. Octagonal piers with embattled tops flank the gates at the angles. The three western sides of the wall are half-height, topped with iron railings that have spear, fleur-de-lys, and Maltese cross finials. The gates on the west side are functional, while those on the east side are blocked.
