Description
The Ornamental Dairy, built between 1845 and 1846, is located to the north of Home Farmhouse on Mill Road. It is likely contemporary with the attached cottage. The structure features nodular flint of unusual size with galleting, and Pulborough stone quoins, plinth, and dressings. The dairy has a pyramidal slate roof and a wooden lantern with a similar pyramidal slate roof.
This single-storey building has an octagonal plan. The south side includes a partly glazed double door set in a 4-centred arch, which is recessed into an oblong panel. The north, east, and west sides each have one mullion-and-transom window with casements, while the diagonal sides feature one transom window with casements. The eaves project sufficiently to create a continuous verandah supported by wooden brackets that spring from moulded corbels, adorned with drop finials at their junction with the eaves.
The octagonal lantern has 4-centred arched lancets on each side, with two lights on the cardinal sides and one light on the diagonal sides. The roof of the lantern is a miniature replica of the main roof, topped with a lead cushion finial and an ornamental bronze weather vane. A portico, supported on joists that extend from the dairy to the adjacent cottage, connects the two buildings. Inside, there are shallow wooden octopartite vaults with moulded ribs, a carved stiffleaf boss, and planked webs, all covered by a lead roof.
The Home Farmhouse, along with the farm buildings, pumping house, and bridge, forms a cohesive group with the retaining walls to the pools.
