Description
Ashford Chace is a mansion built in 1912 by W F Unsworth, now converted into flats. The building has a complex shape but features plain details. Its walls are rendered, and the south elevation has cambered ground floor openings. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled, with hipped sections and dormers, along with a central hexagonal cupola and prominent cemented stacks.
The entrance front, facing north, is symmetrical and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a taller central section. This central part features a two-storey porch flanked by single-storey outshots. Beyond these are tall, narrow wings set at an angle, with half-octagonal ends, the eastern wing containing the staircase. Further outwards, there are two-storey lower wings that also angle outwards, culminating in tall walls that enclose the forecourt. The windows are casements, and there is an arched entrance framed in simple classical stone.
The garden front, facing south, is also symmetrical with projections on either side, featuring two storeys and an attic, with five windows, sashes, and a French door leading to a balcony. To the east side, there is a slightly lower but extensive service range, ending in a lower two-storey crosswing that matches the main building in form and materials, with casement windows. The west elevation, located at the angle between the north-west wing and the main block, includes a two-storey half-octagonal projection above an open verandah supported by Tuscan columns.
