Description
The gateway and walls to the Priory of St Pancras date back to the 13th century and are now incorporated into a wall. They are constructed from stone with flint and stone walling, along with some repairs in red brick. The structure features a Z-plan arrangement, extending from a point near the northeast of the Church of St John Southover in three sections to the northwest corner of Priory Crescent.
The northwest section stands approximately 10 feet high and is 7 yards long, showcasing the remains of a dressed stone arch on the north side at both the eastern and western ends. A grotesque mask has been inserted into the wall to the right of the arch's remains. The central section is 5 yards long and includes a buttressing wall to the east.
The main gate, which was formerly the pedestrian entrance to the Priory, features a pointed arched gateway set within a short stretch of dressed stone wall to the southeast. It has a double-chamfered arch supported by double-ordered piers, although it was much eroded at the time of resurvey. A later 20th-century wrought-iron gateway with dograils and decorative cross-pieces has been added. This gateway was relocated and re-erected from its original position to the west of the Church.
