Description

SU 92 NW LURGASHALL BLACKDOWN FARM 7/205 Main barn at Blackdown Farm 31.7.87 - II Barn. C17 and early C19. Squared rubble in courses with brick quoining to openings; part of the C17 timber frame; plain tile roof, hipped with terminal gablets. Five bays, with a single aisle under a catslide roof on the south west side. Central stone paved threshing floor with opposing wagon entries. The C17 timber framed barn was re-walled in early C19 retaining four aisle posts and two posts to either side of north east entry, the wall and aisle plates and the roof framing. Angle braces to principal beams, raking struts to clasped purlins, wind braces to purlins in several bays. In the north east wall four ventilation slits in two rows to either side of entry, all now masked by later additions. In either end wall two rows of three slits with a further single slit to the end walls of the aisle in the lower row. In the south west (aisle) wall four slits to either side of the entry. A pressed metal grille built into the brick jamb linings of each slit. The later external additions to the barn are not included.
