Description
The main barn at Blackdown Farm is a Grade II listed building dating from the 17th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of squared rubble laid in courses, with brick quoining around the openings. The barn features part of a 17th-century timber frame and has a plain tile roof that is hipped with terminal gablets. It consists of five bays and has a single aisle on the southwest side, which is covered by a catslide roof. Inside, there is a central stone-paved threshing floor with opposing wagon entries.
The 17th-century timber-framed structure was re-walled in the early 19th century, preserving four aisle posts and two posts on either side of the northeast entry, along with the wall and aisle plates and the roof framing. The principal beams are supported by angle braces, and there are raking struts to the clasped purlins, as well as wind braces to the purlins in several bays. The northeast wall features four ventilation slits arranged in two rows on either side of the entry, although these are now obscured by later additions. Each end wall has two rows of three slits, with an additional single slit in the lower row of the aisle end walls. The southwest aisle wall contains four slits on either side of the entry. Each slit has a pressed metal grille built into the brick jamb linings. The later external additions to the barn are not included in the listing.
