Description
The barn at Longdown Farm is a mid-16th century structure with early 18th century additions. It features a timber-framed design clad in weatherboarding, with 18th century brickwork used for the lean-to and outshut. The roof is tiled, with a half-hip on the north side and a catslide on the south. The barn consists of three bays, with a central wagon entrance flanked by open storage bays, the southern one being shorter. The frame is made of heavy scantling, with a midrail and curved braces in the wall frame, jowled upright posts, and curved windbraces. The roof is constructed with side purlins and windbraces, featuring principal rafters that are reduced above purlin level, along with an intermediate collar and queen studs. The roof is framed in four bays. In the early 18th century, a lean-to was added to the south, which was later extended along the southern end of the eastern wall. A full-height open storage bay with flint walls was added to the north, but this was largely rebuilt in brick after damage from the Second World War.
