Description
The Haunt and Gilbert's Cottage are two cottages dating from the late 18th century and early 19th century, with 20th-century extensions to the rear. They are constructed of painted brick in a mixed Flemish bond pattern, with a thin first-floor band and a prominent plinth to one wing. The ground-floor openings feature cambered arches. The roof is tiled, with a wide projection to the east-end gable and a catslide forming a rear canopy. The cross-wing has a ½-hipped roof, with the upper gable timber-framed and three gabled dormers, having sills at eaves level.
The narrower block dates from the early 19th century, while the taller cross-wing, located at the west end, was extended in the 20th century. The front of the cottages has a single storey and attic, with an overall width of three windows. The windows are early 19th-century cast-iron casements. The doorways are plain; one door, belonging to Gilbert’s Cottage, is of four panels, while the other is boarded. The east gable has two narrow windows above two wider windows, both being early 19th-century cast-iron casements. A document from 1739 refers to the construction of a new house, likely The Haunt.
