Description
Morestead Church is a parish church dating from the 12th century, which underwent extensive restoration in 1873. A school and cottage were added to the west in 1833. The church is constructed of flint with stone dressings, while the school features brick dressings and has an old plain tile roof. The church follows a Norman plan, consisting of a chancel, nave, and south porch, with a west bell turret and a single-storey, two-bay building attached to the west end. The nave is from the 12th century, but the chancel was rebuilt in the 19th century.
The chancel features a large rounded-headed east window and smaller rounded-headed side windows. The nave has similar but larger windows and buttresses at the east end, along with a 19th-century gabled porch that includes a round-headed archway decorated with chevrons and nook shafts. The north and south doorways are plain round-headed and date back to the 12th century, having been restored. The bell turret, made of plain brick with a stone roof, is also notable.
The cottage has a south front with a central door in a gabled brick porch featuring a round arch, flanked by round-headed windows. Inside the chancel, the east window displays chevrons and a label, and the roof is from the 19th century. The chancel arch is adorned with chevrons and springs from corbels. The nave contains old rear arches leading to doors, with the north door now converted into a window with brick in the bottom half. The rear arch of the west window dates to the 13th century. The nave also features a 18th-century arched brace roof that has been plastered, retaining two tie beams. A late 12th-century Purbeck octagonal font is present, showcasing blank arcades on its sides and a central shaft surrounded by smaller shafts. There is no known dedication for the church.
