Description
Leam Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century, which was extensively remodeled in the early 18th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble gritstone with quoins on the rear elevation, featuring coped gables with moulded kneelers, end ashlar ridge stacks, and stone slates. The building has two storeys and four bays. The first floor includes two 3-light mullioned windows, while the ground floor features a 2-light and a 3-light window, along with a single light stair window at half landing level and a small fire window at the north-west end. All windows have flush mullions and surrounds, with many retaining saddle bars, and two windows have diamond leaded lights. There is also 20th-century joinery present. The off-centre doorway has substantial jambs and a lintel, leading to a plain planked door. The rear elevation shows mid-wall quoining, indicating alterations to the building's form. Inside, there is a fine late 17th-century hearth with a moulded cornice, currently located against the north-west gable, which may have originally been positioned more centrally within an earlier house.
