Description
Fern Cottage and the attached outbuilding to the northeast is a house with an outbuilding that dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed rubble gritstone and features quoins, coped gables, and moulded kneelers. It has intermediate and southwest end ridge stacks, topped with a stone slated roof.
The house has an 'L' plan layout with an off-centre lobby entrance. It is two storeys high and has two bays, which include 2-light flush mullioned windows and 19th-century casements. The off-centre doorway has a massive lintel and surround, leading to a plain door. The rear wing features a tall 2-light flush mullioned window on the first floor.
The outbuilding has a northeast elevation that is two storeys tall and consists of three bays, with the northwest end being gabled and advanced. There is a central double-width opening to the main range, flanked by square windows. Above this, there are taking-in doorways, all with heavy quoining around the surrounds, and these doorways are fitted with plain boarded doors. The advanced gabled bay also has a taking-in door.
