Description
The enclosure wall to the gardens of Greenbanks, Hallcroft, and The Bungalow is a garden wall that was formerly part of Bagshaw Hall. It dates from the 17th century and was altered in the 19th century. The wall is made of coursed sandstone and forms the boundary of a rectangular enclosure measuring approximately 50 meters by 40 meters on the south side of Bagshaw Hill, opposite Bagshaw Hall. This enclosure is subdivided by a north-south retaining wall, with lower ground to the east.
The section of the wall facing the road is over 2 meters high and features large quoins at the west end, along with two-course triangular copings. There is a later pedestrian opening and a 17th-century quoined and chamfered gateway that has cross-boarded oak doors beneath a stone lintel. The east end of the roadside wall has been altered to create a 20th-century vehicle entrance.
On the south side of the enclosure, the 17th-century wall slopes down with the falling ground and is largely intact. The west side retains higher ground, but the south end has been broken through and altered. The east side of the enclosure features a wall of later date, constructed from rubble limestone. The area within the walls is now occupied by Greenbanks, Hallcroft, and The Bungalow, which are not included in this listing.
