Description
The barn and cowhouse at Hall Broom Farm, located approximately 20 metres to the west of the farmhouse, is likely from the 17th century, with some rebuilding from the 19th century. It features a cruck frame and is constructed of coursed gritstone rubble, with the left side rebuilt in squared, punched gritstone and a Welsh slate roof. The structure has five internal bays and is primarily a single storey, except for the fifth bay, which is two storeys high, and there is an outshut at the front of bays three and four.
The building has a boulder plinth on the uphill left part, large quoins, and rebuilt walling. A large boarded cart door is located in bay two, rising above the eaves. To the right, there is a two-bay outshut supported by four rough pillars with walling in between, featuring two board doors and a casement window. Stone steps lead up to a first-floor board door, with another door in a quoined surround to the right. The end of the building has two single-light chamfered openings above, one of which is blocked. It also has moulded kneelers and gable copings.
On the right return, there is a blocked two-light double-chamfered mullion window now enclosed in an adjacent building, along with two small square-headed chamfered lights in the gable and a similar pointed light at the apex. Inside, there are four cruck pairs, with the left-hand truss being of smaller scantling. A wall post is adjacent to the cruck blade near the outshut. The wall tie beam to the right-hand cruck has a morticed soffit and an upper face grooved for infill, and this beam is now underbuilt with stone. The interior features single purlins and some wind braces, with three trusses having saddle apexes and the ridge absent in bays four and five. The cowhouse in bay five has two chamfer-stopped spine beams with a chamber above. A lower extension to the right is not of special interest.
