Description
The premises occupied by the Madeira House Restaurant is a former house dating from the mid-18th century, now serving as a restaurant. It is constructed of rendered rubble limestone with gritstone dressings, featuring plain gables and end stone stacks, topped with a Welsh slated roof. The building has three storeys and two bays, with mullioned windows on the first and second floors. The second-floor windows are 2-lights with chamfered mullions, while the first-floor windows are 3-lights with flush mullions. All windows now have painted surrounds and are fitted with glazing bar sashes or casements. The ground floor includes a 4-light window and a 20th-century addition. There is a plain rectangular opening at the northeast end and a plain doorway at the southwest end, which has a 20th-century door. It is noted that the building is said to have formerly housed the town lock-up.
