Description

Markeygate House is a house dating from the 17th century, with possibly an earlier core, and has undergone significant remodelling over time. It is constructed of rendered rubble limestone with gritstone dressings, featuring quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and stone ridge stacks at both intermediate and end points. The roof is covered with Welsh slates and stone slates. The building has an 'L' plan and is two storeys high with three bays. Originally, it had mullioned windows throughout, but now some windows have 20th-century glazing. The gable at the southwest end contains 2- and 3-light flush mullioned windows with sash frames that do not have glazing bars. The openings at the northeast end have plain surrounds and 20th-century glazing. The central doorway features a 17th-century surround and a planked and studded door, set within an 18th-century flat-roofed porch made of ashlar, which has a moulded doorcase. The southwest side wall has a restored 2-light chamfered mullioned window. Inside, there is a single upper cruck truss that survives in the centre of the house, along with moulded spine beams on the ground floor, a notable 18th-century hearth, and two simpler hearths side by side. There is a roughly run moulded band on the wall plaster of some first-floor rooms, and some 17th-century square and plank and muntin panelling is also present.
