Description

Edale House is a house built around 1800, with later additions and remodelling from the late 19th century and further extensions in the late 20th century. It is constructed of rubble and coursed rubble gritstone, featuring red brick facings on the front elevations and ashlar dressings around the openings. The building has plain gables with gritstone ridge stacks and is covered with Welsh slate and stone slate roofs.

The southeast elevation consists of a principal range of three bays, with a narrower bay set back at the southwest end. The house is two storeys high, with a three-bay range that includes a central doorway set back within an open integral porch, topped by a shallow segmental arch. To the right of the doorway is a tall ashlar canted bay window with mullion and transom frames beneath a flat lead roof. Next to it is a tall glazing bar sash window with 8 over 12 panes, set below a gauged brick head. The first floor features central and left windows that are 8 over 8 pane sashes, while the right side has a tripartite sash window with 8 over 8 panes in the center and 2 over 2 panes in the flanking lights. The setback bay has coupled sashes on the ground floor below an 8 over 8 pane sash. The rear elevation includes some casement windows beneath stone wedge lintels.

Inside, the house retains some six-panel doors within moulded architraves and has moulded plasterwork on the ceilings of the ground floor. Edale House was formerly the residence of the owner of Edale Mill.
