Description
The Edale War Memorial is located on a raised platform behind the chancel of the Holy Trinity Church, which is also a Grade II-listed building. It can be reached by a flight of seven semicircular steps from the lower part of the churchyard and is flanked by retaining walls. The memorial is constructed from York stone and features a Latin cross that rises from a square plinth, which is set on a two-stepped square base. The front and back faces of the cross shaft are adorned with carvings of wreaths, each containing the letters RIP. The shaft itself is supported by a small square block, with winged cherubs at each corner.
The memorial includes inscriptions on metal plaques attached to the plinth. On the east face, it reads: "THIS CROSS IS ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF EDALE TO THE GLORY OF ALMIGHTY GOD & IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH, WHO FOUGHT, & IN EVER GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED ON THE CROSS, WHO FELL FOR GOD, AND KING, FOR RIGHT, FOR FREEDOM, AND FOR PEACE, IN THE 1914 GREAT WAR 1919." The west face states: "REMEMBER (13 NAMES) SEE YE TO IT THAT THESE SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN." The south face commemorates the years 1939 – 1945 with one name listed.
