Description

The Warren and attached cottage is a house and cottage that dates from the 18th century or earlier, with alterations and extensions from the late 18th century and 19th century. The roof was recovered in 1993. The building is constructed from coursed squared rubble gritstone with ashlar dressings and features quoins on the garden elevation, four stone ridge stacks, and a stone-slated roof.

The original structure has a three-bay plan with a central entrance, which was later expanded by adding another three bays that now comprise two cottages. The southeast elevation is two storeys high with six bays, where the three bays on the left form the original house. The central doorway has a moulded surround and a pulvinated frieze below a segmental pediment, with a 20th-century 15-pane glazed door. Above the door is a bull's eye window set within a heavily moulded surround. Flanking the doorway are stacked windows with old unmoulded stone frames and generally 20th-century glazing-bar frames.

Beyond the quoined corner of the house are three additional bays, two of which on the left are now part of the house and include a doorway with a massive surround and lintel. To the right is a single-bay cottage featuring stacked glazing bar sashes and a doorway with a bracketed rustic canopy. The street elevation has been remodelled in the 19th century but retains a three-light flush-mullioned window with diamond-leaded lights and a corner stack. The building is listed for its group value.
