Description
The Castle Hotel is an early 18th-century hotel located on Castle Street in Castleton. It is constructed of coursed gritstone with gritstone dressings and is partly rendered. The building features a slate roof with a brick ridge stack and four gable end stacks made of brick and stone. The gables are stone coped and have moulded kneelers, with angle quoins and a plinth.
The hotel is designed in an L-shape and has two storeys. The east elevation consists of five bays, with a two-bay return front. The central doorway has a stone surround, with a canted bay window to the left and a glazing bar sash, along with two additional glazing bar sashes to the right, all featuring dressed stone surrounds. Above, there are five glazing bar sashes with stone surrounds, the central window adorned with a boldly projecting hoodmould. Three gabled dormer windows are positioned above.
The return front includes a stone doorcase with pilasters and a pediment, along with a small glazing bar sash and two glazing bar sashes above, topped with a stone coped parapet. All the sashes are framed with plain stone surrounds.
