Description

Castleton Hall is a house that has been converted into a youth hostel. It dates from the early to late 18th century and is constructed of coursed limestone with cement rendered dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate, featuring one pitch with stone slates, and there are four stone ridge stacks along with two gable end stacks. The building is two storeys high and has an L-plan, with the main part being double pile. The east elevation consists of seven bays, plus an additional bay and a three-bay return front to the north.

The facade is Baroque in style, showcasing bold classical details. It features a central doorway with a massive plain stone surround, a panelled door, and a glazed overlight. On either side of the doorway are casement windows with fixed upper lights, all set in heavy stone surrounds that include keystones and pediments. A first-floor band connects the lintels of the windows. Above, there are three windows with stone surrounds, aprons, and triplets of keystones. The central three bays are accentuated by giant pilasters, while the outer two bays on each side have ground floor windows with stone surrounds and keystones that overlap the first-floor band. The windows above are similar but lack keystones and feature plain brackets. The entire facade is topped with a coved cornice and a parapet.
