Description

The coach house, stables, and hayloft, located to the north of Castern Hall, date from the mid-19th century. Constructed from coursed rubble with hammer-dressed ashlar quoins and dressings, the building features a clay tile roof and rubble stacks that are coursed, squared, and dressed. It consists of three ranges that enclose a rectangular courtyard, with the northern and western ranges adjoining and sharing a common roofline.

The west range is two storeys high with four roof bays. On the ground floor, there is a two-leaved coach house door to the left, a board door to the left of centre flanked by a top-opening window on the right, and stable doors in the centre and to the right of centre, the latter also flanked by top-opening windows. The first floor has windows to the left, centre, and two to the left of centre, along with a hayloft opening with a board door to the right of centre. A door to the right is accessed by a flight of steps, and there is an integral end stack to the left. Tallet steps on the left gable lead to a first-floor door with a straight dripstone.

The north range is also two storeys and has three roof bays. The ground floor features stable doors to the right and left of centre, both with a top-opening window to the right. A first-floor door to the left is approached by stone steps that are common to both the north and west ranges, with loft openings to the left and right of centre. There is a board door to the right in the gap between the north and last ranges.

The east range is a single storey and has board doors to the left and left of centre, both with a top-opening window to the right. There is a blocked door to the right of centre and a ridge stack to the right of centre. Additionally, there is a pair of coach house doors on the south gable end.
