Description
The Brindley Memorial Fountain is a village fountain and water troughs, dated 1875. It is constructed from ashlar gritstone and features a gabled fountain head with carved copings that incorporate seating. The fountain is set within a half-landing amidst two flights of stone steps; the upper part consists of a single flight, while the lower steps are arranged in two parallel flights on either side of the fountain head. All steps have low railings and there are three stone troughs above a stone-set approach to the fountain from the east. The west face of the fountain head is inscribed with '1875. IN MEMORY OF JAMES BRINDLEY CIVIL ENGINEER. BORN IN THIS PARISH.' James Brindley, the pioneering canal engineer, was born in the nearby hamlet of Tunstead.
