Description
The Packhorse Bridge, located in Washgate, is an early 18th-century structure built from rubble and coursed rubble limestone with gritstone dressings. It features a shallow segmental arch, which has a carefully coursed lining, and shallow parapet walls topped with gritstone copings that are connected by iron cramps. The metalled surface of the routeway from the north continues onto the bridge. This bridge serves as a crossing point over the River Dove for an ancient packhorse route that runs from Longnor into the Goyt Valley. It is a rare example of a perfectly preserved packhorse bridge.
