Description

The Duke's Barn, dated 1791, is a barn and outbuildings with a continuous roof, located on the north side of School Lane in Beeley. At the time of re-survey, it was mostly being converted into a residential centre for the Royal School for the Deaf. The structure is built from coursed rubble gritstone, featuring gritstone dressings and quoins, and has a cement tile roof. The west gable is coped and includes moulded kneelers and a ball finial.

On the south elevation, from left to right, there are three full-height round arches with ashlar surrounds. The first two arches have 20th-century infill, while the third opens through the building. In the spandrel above the arches, there is a moulded datestone inscribed MDCCXCI. To the right of the arches, there is a doorway with chamfered quoins and lintel, fitted with 20th-century doors. Further right, there is another doorway and a pair of doorways, all with lintels and quoins, now containing 20th-century windows. Continuing to the right, there is a 20th-century doorway, a 20th-century window, and a similar doorway that has been converted into a window.

There is a projecting gabled range that is not of special interest. Beyond this, there is a full-height cart entrance with a segmental arch and plank doors. The first floor features four irregularly placed windows, all fitted with 20th-century casements.
