Description
This is a mid 19th-century barn and stables that form a single L-shaped block, located 4 metres northwest of Hilltop Farmhouse in Heathcote, Hartington Nether Quarter. The building is constructed of random rubble with sandstone dressings and features tiled roofs. It serves as an integrated farm building containing various functional units. The gables have coping and kneelers, and there is quoining throughout. Two doorways with rebated surrounds appear to be reused, while all other openings have tooled long and short stone surrounds, with doors that are planked and fitted with strap hinges. There is a flight of external stairs facing the farmyard that serves the shorter of the two wings, and another set of stairs at the rear of the shorter wing. The rear wall has two tiers of slit ventilators. This well-preserved mid 19th-century farm building is included for its group value with Hilltop Farmhouse and is likely contemporary with the rear wing of the house.
