Description

The Church of St Bartholomew is a parish church built around 1781 on an earlier site. It features coursed stone and ashlar facings with a blue slate roof and verge parapets. The structure includes a tower, nave, and chancel all in one. The tower has four stages, with raised chamfered quoins and bands between the stages, topped by a block crenellated parapet and pinnacles. It has single-light, round-arched, block-dressed windows, with 'Y' tracery and stone louvres in the bell chamber, a blind arched window in the middle stage, and a round-arched west door with a rusticated surround and double doors.

The nave consists of five bays and features two tiers of round-arched windows, with quoins and bands at the cill and springing levels of both tiers, as well as moulded eaves and a blocking course. The windows have fixed small-pane lights with moulded arched heads and keystones, and the upper level windows are smaller. The centre window on the south side was formerly an entrance. The east end has rough-faced masonry and a Serlian window with a round arch above it.

Inside, the tower porch leads to the nave, which has no aisles and incorporates the chancel, with a plain ceiling. There is a break-fronted gallery supported by turned columns, and a Serlian east window set in an arched rebate, with radial foliage plasterwork above. The pulpit, dating from the 19th century, is made of pine and is boarded. The font, which is of chalice shape and made from gritstone, dates back to the 12th century or earlier and features rough carved low-relief figures and faces within shields. A Georgian coat of arms is fixed to the gallery in a swan-necked frame.
